The Western Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS) is the division in which the Sounders play. The club was founded on November 13, 2007, and as an MLS expansion team, they started competing in 2009. The Sounders, a phoenix team that shares the same name as the original Sounders franchise that played in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1974 to 1983, are a phoenix organization.

Sigi Schmid left his position as head coach in July 2016, and Brian Schmetzer, a former USL Sounders assistant coach, took over. Lumen Field is where the Sounders host their league games, with a capacity of 37,722.

Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps FC, two other Pacific Northwest teams with whom Seattle plays for the Cascadia Cup, have been long-standing rivalries.

On March 19, 2009, the Sounders defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-0 in their first game. One of the most successful teams in the league, Seattle won the Supporters’ Shield in 2014, the MLS Cup in 2016 and 2019, the U.S. Open Cup four times, and the MLS Cup twice. The team played in the CONCACAF Champions League six times, becoming the first MLS team to win the modern version of the competition in 2022, and qualified for the MLS Cup Play-offs for the longest streak in league history (from its founding in MLS until 2022). The First MLS team to compete in the FIFA Club World Cup was the Seattle Sounders.
